Support for reminisce café in Warrington

A COMMUNITY café in Warrington supporting people with dementia has found a friend in us.

We donated £750 to the Reminisce Café at Westbrook Library via the Love From Anwyl initiative.

Heather Copperwheat, chair of Westbrook Library Friends CIC, explained: “Dementia can have a significant emotional, social and physical impact on individuals, families and carers, often affecting confidence, independence and daily life. The idea behind the Reminisce Café was to provide a warm and welcoming space designed for people living with dementia and their companions. The support we received from Anwyl has made a significant contribution to the community, helping cover the cost of the room hire and providing equipment to deliver activities for the sessions.”

During the session visitors can enjoy refreshments and take part in fun, engaging activities such as card and board games, quizzes, music, gentle exercise and other brain stimulating activities.

Westbrook Library Friends CIC is a not-for-profit group of volunteers who work to keep Westbrook Library thriving and open to the public. The group was established after the library was threatened with closure and campaigned to keep it open. Following the removal of librarians by Warrington Borough Council to save costs, the library is now staffed entirely by volunteers and open to the public six days a week.

The library is around 1.5 miles from Anwyl’s Eagles Green development.

Regional marketing manager Phoebe Davies said: “Westbrook Library Friends CIC have done an amazing job in not simply keeping the much-loved community facility running but hosting various activities for people living in the Warrington area to enjoy. We’re proud to have been able to help them set up the Reminisce Café to support people living with dementia and their families. In the space of just a few short months it’s made a real difference and long may it continue.”

Love From Anwyl is a voluntary scheme, attached to 157 homes being built at Eagles Green as part of the successful Omega redevelopment of the former 600-acre RAF Burtonwood airbase on the north-west edge of Warrington.

The initiative has also helped Cromwell Athletic Under 11s Spitfires purchase new kits, while Sankey Valley St James Primary School is putting the donation it received towards improvements to its outside space.

The Reminisce Café takes place every Wednesday from 10.30am to 12pm at Westbrook Library and Community Centre. For more information about the Reminisce Café and other events at the library see www.facebook.com/westbrook.library or www.westbrooklibrary.com.
