Wirral

8 of the Best Places to Live on the Wirral

A coastal region of the North West, the Wirral Peninsula is home to a nice mix of towns and villages, and sits about 20 minutes’ drive from Liverpool, with several of its towns providing direct trains into the neighbouring city. There’s also plenty of things to do and see there, meaning it’s a great place to visit.

But if you’re wondering “Is the Wirral a nice place to live?”, we’re here to help you make up your mind, as we list our best places to live on the Wirral below.

1. Bebington

If you’re considering living in Wirral, then we have to mention the highly acclaimed town of Bebington, which, on multiple occasions, has been voted the most desirable place to live and work in England.

The town’s rural setting gives it a homely, village-like feel, with several properties dating back to its humbler beginnings still standing, including 25, The Village – a Grade II listed building dating back to the 17th century.

Bebington’s primary leisure centre, The Oval Leisure Centre, provides residents with a publicly available swimming pool, squash courts, football pitches, with outdoor tennis courts and running tracks also available.

It’s also an ideal place for families with children to settle down in, as some of the best schools in the peninsula can be found in Bebington, such as Wirral Grammar School for Boys and Wirral Grammar School for Girls.

And if you’re considering moving to Bebington, we have Lottie Gardens, an exciting new development in the town available, so let us know if you’d like to book a viewing.

2. West Kirby

If you’re after a beachfront property, West Kirby is the place to look. A popular spot for sailboarding, sailing and kayaking, the town lends itself well to those who love the open water.

It’s also known for its parks, such as Ashton Park, Coronation Gardens and Sandlea Gardens, all situated in the centre of town.

Offering good commuter links, West Kirby has its own train station and is also served by both Arriva North West and Stagecoach Merseyside, each offering an easy and convenient way to get to Liverpool Central.

3. Wallasey

Offering excellent views of the surrounding Welsh Hills, Wallasey is a lovely part of the Wirral to live in and is home to New Brighton, known for its sandy beaches and floral pavilion.

The Liscard area of Wallasey houses the town’s main shopping district and its largest park – the Central Park.

It’s also very well connected thanks to four different train stations. Commuters can choose from stations at New Brighton, Liscard, Wallasey Village, and Wallasey Grove Road, all of which offer services into the neighbouring city of Liverpool, effectively meaning that wherever you choose to live in Wallasey, you’re never too far from a railway station.

4. Birkenhead

Birkenhead is the largest and most populous town on the Wirral, and with good reason. The town is lovely to walk around, with its central Hamilton Square having more grade I listed buildings than any other square in England not named Trafalgar.

A highly practical, commuter-friendly town, Birkenhead is connected to most of Liverpool’s major stations – including Liverpool Lime Street, Liverpool James Street and Liverpool Central – via an underground train service that can be taken from Birkenhead Hamilton Square Railway Station.

The town only sits 8 miles away from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and is home to several schools and public parks, including the popular Birkenhead Park. It’s also currently undergoing significant changes, with further improvements expected as part of its 20-year regeneration plan, making it one of the best places to live on the Wirral both now and in the future.

5. Heswall

Heswall has consistently been ranked as one of the more expensive parts of the Wirral, with its envious position on the Dee Estuary contributing significantly to its desirability.

Like many of the towns and villages on the Wirral, it benefits from its coastal location, with the town also having an excellent golf course and a town centre home to award winning restaurants and cafes, like Silk Road and Dé Buddha.

In terms of transport links, Heswall has its own train station, offering services to both Bidston and Wrexham, and provides easy access to the M23, which connects it to both Liverpool and Chester.

6. Hoylake

Home to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake is a seaside town with a lively community, where you’ll find the Hoylake Social Club – a community hub that regularly puts on bingo nights, Irish music jams, and darts and snooker competitions.

Heading down to the coast, there’s also a beautiful promenade awaiting you, and in addition to its beach, the town is also home to the green-flag awarded park, Queen’s Park, and the popular Meols Parade Garden, which provides stunning views by overlooking the sea.

7. Caldy

A hidden gem of the Wirral Peninsula, Caldy has a lot going for it. Located close to the sea, many affluent people working in Liverpool have bought properties here to escape the hustle and bustle of city life in search of more privacy, including Premier League footballers and managers.

Among the reasons Caldy is among the more sought-after villages on the Wirral are the stunning views of the River Dee estuary available from its beach and a mixture of modern mansions and red sandstone buildings.

And if you’re into sports, their rugby team currently play in the Rugby Championship, which is quite the feat considering fewer than 1500 people live in the village!

8. Port Sunlight

Last but not least on our list of best places to live on the Wirral, Port Sunlight is a village within the Wirral. Initially developed by The Lever Brothers for its employees in 1888, the village has gone on to become one of the peninsula’s more storied villages, with the village housing over 900 Grade II listed buildings.

A well-preserved village, Port Sunlight was declared a conservation area in 1978, with highlights including the Lady Lever Art Gallery and the Port Sunlight Museum & Worker’s Cottage.

Furthermore, a lovely day out can be made even better by a visit to the Nettle Café or a drink at the local Bridge Inn.
