Junior footballers in Great Sankey score training kits

Kitting out a junior football team in Great Sankey is just one of the ways we’re being good neighbours.

Cromwell Athletic Under 11s Spitfires, who play in the Belle Vale League on Sundays, scored sponsorship via our Love From Anwyl initiative.

The community funding pot is linked to the Eagles Green development on Burtonwood Road.

Team volunteer Jen Davies explained “The U11 Spitfires team was formed so that a group of boys who knew each other from school or played football together for different teams on Saturdays could play more of the sport on a Sunday. They’re a mix of year five and six boys, which means some of them are playing a year up, which is a challenge for them and a great footballing experience.

“Cromwell’s home ground and training pitch is just over the road from Anwyl’s Eagles Green development and it’s good to have support from a local business. Anwyl’s sponsorship has enabled us to buy training kits and training jackets. Training wearing the same kit helps the boys feel more like a team and the jackets are perfect for warming up before matches.”

Cromwell Athletic is a fast developing, community focused club based in Great Sankey. Established for more than 30 years, the club provides opportunities to play and enjoy football, build friendships and develop social skills. The club is a Tier 3 FA club, focused on providing Football For All, regardless of gender, ability or experience.

Head of regional marketing Phoebe Davies said: “We were pleased to be able to help our near neighbours Cromwell Athletic by sponsoring the Under 11 Spitfires’ training kits. Grassroots sports clubs like Cromwell Athletic are at the heart of the community, helping young people make new friends, develop important life skills such as communication and teamwork, all while staying fit and active. We hope the new training kits will bring the team lots of luck.”

Other beneficiaries of the Love From Anwyl initiative include Sankey Valley St. James Primary School to help improve their outside space and Westbrook Library Friends CIC towards the cost of running a dementia café.

Love From Anwyl is a voluntary scheme, attached to 157 homes being built at Eagles Green as part of the successful Omega redevelopment of the former 600-acre RAF Burtonwood airbase on the north-west edge of Warrington
