A charity tackling hygiene poverty supported 12,000 people in Cheshire East and South Manchester in the first half of the year.

Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank revealed the figure as it prepares to host its fourth Golf Day, sponsored by Anwyl Homes.

The event is due to take place at Wilmslow Golf Club on Thursday, September 12.

It’s the charity’s main fundraiser, with around £50,000 generated via the competition since the inaugural event in 2021.

Charity founder Wendy Hobson explained: “Bare Necessities provides toiletries, hygiene products and beauty items in a range of packs to people in need across five sectors: women, youth and schools, mother and baby, homeless and food banks. We make monthly deliveries to 32 charities in the Cheshire East and South Manchester area. The packs contain differing requirements suitable for teens, men and women and also smaller "well-being packs".

“This year, including totes, other small packs and two campaigns of Give a Smile and Suds Give a Wash Day, we have helped 12,000 local people living in hygiene poverty up until the end of June with an expectation of almost doubling this by the year end. We’ve also given 11 full pallets of toiletries to foodbanks. The cost of living crisis has obviously impacted all charities but our generous supporters have continued to donate products and money when they can.

“Anwyl have very generously supported our annual golf day for four years, since its inauguration. Their support has been integral to the success of the golf days which provide funds that allow us to purchase essential toiletries and continue our vital work tackling hygiene poverty. The help Anwyl provides on the day is also invaluable enabling us to keep this popular event running smoothly.”

A total of 26 teams will take part in the golf day, including two Anwyl teams.

Golf pro Oliver Pantoja is also supporting the fundraiser for a fourth year and will run a “beat the pro” competition on the challenging downhill ninth hole playing across the water.

John Grime, managing director of Anwyl Homes Lancashire, said: “The golf day is a great way of raising awareness of the Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank, a small local charity making a big difference to people’s lives. The products they provide are things most of us take for granted, but for some people are considered luxuries. As a long-term supporter of the charity we’re proud to be playing our part in helping address a rising demand for its services.”

Anwyl’s sponsorship of the event includes providing welcome packs to the golfers and two prizes.
