Anwyl helps young people build their skills

The Anwyl Group are helping inspire young people to build their future careers in housebuilding. The Anwyl Group is helping inspire young people to develop the tools they need for future careers in housebuilding and construction. Anwyl Homes Lancashire was a sponsor of the PLACED Environmental Academy through its ‘Love From Anwyl’ community pot, which is linked to new homes being built at Edenhurst Grange in Liverpool. By coincidence one of the Academy participants, Daniel Tildsley, has now undertaken a work experience placement at Halton Court, an Anwyl Group development in Runcorn.
Daniel explained: “We had a design challenge throughout the PLACED programme around high streets and sustainability, with the support of mentors. It enabled me to learn a lot about the different careers in housebuilding and construction, alongside learning about design and working collaboratively in a team. It certainly opened my eyes to the digital and data side of construction.”
Daniel was among 30 young people to take part in the PLACED Academy, a free to access, creative programme about the built environment.
PLACED director Jo Harrop said: “The academy is designed to tackle the barriers young people face in accessing professional careers in the built environment, including careers such as architecture, planning, urban design and project management. It seeks to support greater diversity in the sector by enabling participants to develop their skills and confidence and empower them as active members of society.”
Daniel, 18, from Runcorn, attended Cronton Sixth Form College in Widnes, and his on site placement with Anwyl was arranged through the college
“I was on site two days a week working with a civil engineer. It was great to have that real-life experience of being on site. It’s helped reinforce what I’ve learned at college and help me understand the different elements a lot better,” said Daniel, who plans to study architectural technology at university with a view to pursuing a career in architecture and design in future.
PLACED project officer India Morgan added: “It is our hope and ambition that connecting young people with industry will lead on to further opportunities for them within the sector. Daniel was a brilliant academy participant, and we were delighted to hear about his placement with Anwyl. This is exactly the kind of coincidence we are aiming for.”
The £700 sponsorship received by PLACED was via Love From Anwyl, a voluntary funding scheme attached to 124 new homes being built at Edenhurst Grange in Knowsley. Anwyl has also agreed to continue sponsoring the PLACED Academy this year.
Pete Giddins, area construction manager for Anwyl Homes Lancashire, said: “Programmes like the PLACED Academy are a great way to help inspire young people and teach them more about the different career paths in the housebuilding and construction industries. It was serendipitous that, after completing the programme with our support, Daniel then began a placement on one our sister company’s development sites. Who knows, once he’s graduated he may go on to work for us too.”
