Children at a Cheshire school have a new quiet space with the help of our team.

Sandiway Primary School PTA had been raising money for around four years to makeover an “overgrown and uninviting” outdoor area.

Progress with the project was slow until we stepped in, with the support of its suppliers and contractors.

Chair of the PTA Rebecca Roberts said: “This project is one that I've personally been working towards for nearly four years, so it's incredibly exciting to finally see it come together and, more importantly, to see the children enjoying the space. Having provided funds for some of the works through fundraising events, the PTA is hugely grateful to Anwyl and all of the contractors involved, for the practical support in transforming the area. It’s been a genuine community effort involving the school, PTA, , volunteers and families. I would also like to acknowledge the support of M6 Beds, JRD Surveyors and the Ark Café for their kind donations.”

The new quiet space includes a dedicated reading space, creative craft area and picnic tables where children can enjoy lunch, socialise with friends or take part in quieter activities such as board and card games.

Head teacher Debbie Bertram explained: “The project originated from discussions within the School Council where pupils expressed a desire for a dedicated quiet space that could be enjoyed by children who preferred calmer activities during social times.

“Working closely with the PTA the children helped to develop ideas and plans for the area, ensuring it reflected their needs and interests. Improvements were made as resources allowed, but progress was gradual due to limited funds.

“The support from Anwyl and its contractors has been transformational. The donation of time, expertise and materials has enabled significant progress to be made in a relatively short period turning the area into a practical, attractive and welcoming space that can be enjoyed by all pupils. Their generosity has helped bring the children's vision to life far sooner than would otherwise have been possible.”

We provided project management and practical assistance in bringing the project forward along with the support of some of its contractors. WPI Civil Engineering Ltd undertook the site preparation, WGL Chester Ltd created the new bark play area, Forshaws Fencing Ltd erected the new enclosure, Smalley (North West) Ltd provided decorating materials and Kenny Waste Management disposed of waste from the project. Parents and the site maintenance officer assisted with clearing, planting and painting.

John Grime, managing director of our Lancashire business, said: “When we heard about the school’s ambition to create a quiet area, we were happy to be able to help. The design had input from both pupils and teachers, with the children showing creativity and enthusiasm for the project. The PTA, through events and parent support, had raised funds for part of the project and we were pleased to be able to assist them in bringing an underutilised part of the school grounds back into good use.”

“The children are absolutely delighted with the transformation,” Mrs Bertram added. “They’re proud to see their ideas become a reality and have embraced the space

enthusiastically. The area is now a welcoming and inviting place where children enjoy spending time together and it’s quickly become a valued part of the school environment.”

We recently completed a housing development in nearby Winnington and have several live developments across Cheshire.
