A SHREWSBURY school has transformed an outdated mural into a vibrant piece of art thanks to support from our Love from Anwyl fund.
Woodfield & St George’s Parent, Teacher and Friends Association applied for £900 to revitalise a wall at St George’s Junior School in Woodfield Road.
The school’s entrance featured a long-standing mural – depicting a damsel in distress rescued by a knight – which leaders felt no longer reflected the values they wish to promote to their 350-plus pupils.
With the funding from us, the wall was cleaned and prepared before being transformed with a new design celebrating optimism and inclusivity. Local artist Luke Jinks, who works at Sun House Tattoo in Shrewsbury, offered their services free of charge, with pupils also playing an active role in bringing the new mural to life.
Pru Allison, from Woodfield & St George’s Parent, Teacher and Friends Association said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Anwyl for this support. The previous mural didn’t reflect the inclusive, forward-looking message we want to share with our pupils every day. This project gave us the opportunity to create something that inspires all children, regardless of gender or background, and encourages them to believe in their own potential. Involving the children in designing and painting the mural made it even more special.”

The Love From Anwyl Shrewsbury fund is linked to the 106 homes we’re building at Five Oaks in Bicton Heath. The £5,000 fund was shared among a range of local good causes, supporting initiatives that make a positive difference in the community.
